England-Canterbury, London, Bath and Bristol.
Von Calais aus sind wir mit der Fähre nach Dover gefahren. Da die Fähre erst nach 21:00 Uhr in England ankam haben wir auf dem Parkplatz eines Supermarktes übernachtet, es war sehr ruhig, trotzdem der Supermarkt 24 Stunden geöffnet ist. Gut ausgeschlafen sind wir dann am nächsten Morgen über Canterbury nach London gefahren. Canterbury ist das religiöse Zentrum der anglikanischen Kirche auf der Insel. Nach einem kleinem Stadtbummel haben wir ausgiebig die bischöfliche Kathedrale besichtigt. Ein gotischer Kirchenbau von 1070, der durch seine Ausmaße sehr beeindruckend ist.
We took the ferry from Calais, France to Dover, England. The ferry was delayed over 2.5 hours so we did not arrive in Dover till 9pm. We stayed in the parking lot of a 24 hour supermarket. It was very quiet and after a good night’s sleep we drove to London stopping to see Canterbury. Canterbury is located on a small island and is the religious center for the Anglican church. We strolled through the town and saw the impressive gothic church that was built in 1070.

Nach dem Mittagessen ging es weiter nach London, An den Linksverkehr hatte ich mich langsam gewöhnt, Lois traut sich noch nicht zu fahren. In London ist es auch nicht so einfach zu fahren. Unsere Paula (GPS) führte uns sicher zum Londoner Campingplatz im Stadtteil Crystal Palast. Der Platz machte einen guten Eindruck, war aber sehr teuer, 3 Nächte 100 €. Nebenbei kostet ein Liter Diesel 1.85 €. Bisher war auf unserer Reise der Diesel überall teuerer als in Deutschland.
After lunch we drove to London, and I started to feel a little more comfortable driving on the left side. Lois does not dare drive in England. It is not very easy to drive in London. Paula, our GPS directed us to the camp ground in the Crystal Palace area. It was a beautiful campground but very expensive (100 € for 3 nights $150 CDN). A liter of diesel is € 1.85 ($2.70 CDN) and more expensive than in Germany.
Am Nachmittag haben wir eine Radtour in die nähere Umgebung gemacht. Fahrradwege gibt es nicht so viel in England Und mit dem Linksverkehr hatten wir so unsere Probleme.
Der nächste Tag war total verregnet, wir haben es uns im Wohnmobil gemütlich gemacht und relaxt.
In the afternoon we rode our bikes around the area. There aren’t any bikeways in England and riding on the left is a little difficult. The next day it rained hard so we relaxed in the motor home.

Am folgenden Tag war das Wetter wieder gut, einige Wolken am Himmel machten uns keine Angst und so ging es mit dem Doppeldecker Bus in die City. Nach einer Stunde Fahrt durch viele enge Strassen stiegen wir an der Westminster Brücke aus. Wir wollten zuerst Westminster Abbey besichtigen, waren aber nicht bereit für den Besuch für uns Beiden in einer Kirche 35 € zu zahlen. Das Gleiche gilt für die Kathedrale St. Paul. Vorbei am Paradeplatz der berittenen Garde der Königin ging es zur durch den St.James’s Park zur Wachablösung am Buckingham Palast.
The next day the weather was better and we were not frightened by the clouds. We went by double deck bus to London city center. After an hour on the bus through narrow streets we got off a Westminster bridge. We went to Westminster Abbey but were not prepared to pay € 35 ($50 CDN) to see the inside. St. Paul’s cathedral was also € 35. We saw the Queen’s Mounted Guard and walked through St. Jame’s Park to see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.

Dann haben wir uns entschieden die Stadt mit Ihren Sehenswürdigkeiten per Bus und Schiff zu besichtigen. Es ging ganz gut da wir an den wichtigsten Punkten immer ausgestiegen sind.
Mit dem London Eye, das größte Riesenrad der Welt konnten wir nicht fahren, die Wartezeit betrug 4 Stunden. Man sollte sich vorher im Internet Karten kaufen und die Zeit buchen.
We took a tour of London by bus and boat. We stopped at the most important sights. We didn’t go on the large ferris wheel, the London Eye as the wait time was 4 hours. One should book and buy tickets on the internet to prevent standing in line.

Von London aus sind wir in den Westen der Insel gefahren. Unterwegs haben wir den Steinkreis, eine Opferstätte der Druiden, besucht.
From London we went to the west side of the island. We saw Stonehenge, the stone circle that was created by the Druids.

Von da aus sind wir in die schöne Stadt Bath gefahren. Aus der Geschichte kann man erkenne, dass die Römer hier ein Heilbad gegründet haben, dass bis heute noch existiert. Die Stadt mit Ihren alten Bädern, der Kathedrale und schönen kleinen Gassen hat uns begeistert.
Afterwards we went to the beautiful city of Bath. Once occupied by the Romans which was evident from the medicinal baths that still exist today. We enjoyed the town with the ancient baths, cathedral and beautiful little lanes.

Von Bath aus sind wir mit dem Linienbus nach Bristol gefahren. Bristol ist nach dem Krieg, 1946 die erste Partnerstadt von Hannover geworden. Die Bürger von Bristol haben in Hannover sehr viel Aufbauhilfe geleistet und den Bürgen von Hannover viel gutes zukommen lassen. Ich hatte das große Glück an den 40 und 50 jährigen offiziellen Feierlichkeiten in Bristol teilzunehmen. Bristol ist eine typisch englische Industriestadt mit einem alten Hafen, eine bedeutende Kathedrale und netten Menschen.
From Bath we took the bus to Bristol. Bristol became the first twin town of Hannover in 1946 after the war. The citizens of Bristol were very helpful to the citizens of Hannover after World War II. I was very lucky to take part in the 40 and 50 year celebration in Bristol. Bristol is a typical English industrial town with an old port, an important cathedral and nice people.

Von Bath aus sind wir dann über Wales zum Fährhafen Fishguard gefahren um nach Irland überzusetzen.
We then took the ferry from Fishguard, Wales to Ireland.
Scotland
Von Larne/Irland sind wir mit der Fähre nach Stranraer/Scotland gefahren. Wir hatten von den großen Städten erst mal genug und sind zum Loch Lomond gefahren um hier auf einem schönem Campingplatz 2 Tage bei relativ schönem Wetter zu stehen.
From Larne Ireland we went by ferry to Stranraer Scotland. Since we did not want to see another large city we went to Lake Lomond and spent two sunny days at a beautiful camping site.

In dem kleinem Ort Luss konnten wir eine scotische Hochzeit erleben. Die Herren natürlich im Kilt, der Priester hatte eine Hose im Schottenmuster, und die Damen kamen in Galla.

Vom Loch Lomond aus sind wir dann übers Land gefahren, dabei haben wir auch das Grampian Highland besucht. Hatten allerdings kein Glück mit dem Wetter, ab 500 m war nur noch Nebel. Vorher besuchte wir noch die die am River Tay gelegene kleine aber hübsche Stadt Dunkeld mit Ihrer zum teil zerstörten Kathedrale aus dem 15. Jahrhundert.
We drove from Lake Lomond through the country to the Grampian Highland. We weren’t lucky with the weather as we had fog. We saw the small but pretty city of Dunkeld, located on the River Tay and their cathedral from the 15th century which was partly destroyed.

Die Fahrt ging dann weiter durch eine sehr schöne Landschaft zu Schloss Glamis. Das Schloss machte durch seine Türmchen, Erker und Zwiebelnkuppeln einen sehr verspielten Eindruck. Die königliche Familie bewohnt dieses Schloss manchmal, Prinzessin Margaret ist
hier geboren.
Our journey took us through very beautiful landscape to the Glamis Castle. The castle was very impressive with the turrets. The royal family sometimes lives at this castle and Princess Margaret was born there.

Dann sind wir über Montrose, einem scotischen Urlaubsort am Meer, weiter nach Dundee gefahren. Hier sind mir neben den vielen historische Gebäuden, 3 Dinge aufgefallen. Einmal die Discovery, das Schiff mit dem Kapitän Ccott ein tragische verlaufende Antarktis Expedition unternahm, unsere erste Dudelsack Kapelle und sehr schöne Bushaltestellen ohne Werbung in der Stadt.
We then went to Montrose, a vacation town by the sea and to Dundee. There are many historical buildings in Dundee but I was very impressed by 3 things: the ship the Discovery that Captain Scott used on his tragic Antarctic expedition, the bag pipe band and the beautiful bus stops without advertising.

Unsere nächste Station war dann Edinburgh, der scotischen Hauptstadt. Wegen der Kultur und Geschichte nennt man Sie auch das „Athen des Nordens“. Auffallend und alles überragend ist das Edinburgher Schloss. Es überragt auf einem 110 m hohen steilen Felsen die Stadt und ist auch Ihr Wahrzeichen . Bei sehr schönem Wetter haben wir am ersten Tag einen ausgiebigen Spaziergang über die Royal Mile zum Holyrood Palst gemacht, der dann abgeschlossen wurde mit einem Anstieg auf den Tafelberg Arthur’s Seat, von dem man einen wunderschönen Blick auf die Stadt hat. Am zweiten Tag wollten wir eine Schlossbesichtigung machen, leider war die Wartezeit über 3 Stunden. Wir hatten keine Lust so lange zu warten, sind dann auf den bekannten Aussichtsberg Calton Hill gelaufen wo aber leider wegen Nebel die Sicht schlecht war. Da es auch sehr kalt wurde sind wir mit dem Bus zum Campingplatz gefahren und haben hier 2 Tage auf besseres Wetter gewartet. Leider wurde es immer schlechter und so haben wir entschieden auf den schnellsten Weg zurück zum Festland zu fahren. Desto weiter wir in den Süden kamen desto besser wurde das Wetter.
Our next stop was Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland which is called the "Athens of the north". The Edinburgh Castle is striking and towers above the city. The castle is on a 110m high steep rock hill. It was a beautiful sunny day and we walked along the Royal Mile to Holyrood Park. We climbed up Arthur’s Seat Mountain and had a lovely view of the city. On the second day we wanted to see the castle but did not want to wait for 3 hours. We went to Calton Hill but with the heavy fog we were not able to see the view. It was very cold and damp so we returned by bus to the campsite. We had planned to stay two more days but the weather got worse so we took the fastest route back to the mainland. The we drove south, the weather became better and better.
